TOWARDS
ZERO GARBAGE ENVIRONMENT & ECO FRIENDLY LIVING IN
GEM NIRMAALAYAM
Introduction
GEM Nirmaalayam is a Gated Community
which will have over 145 families living in the colony.
In order to ensure that we achieve having an ecologically
friendly and environmentally clean colony, it is essential
that we follow certain norms which would make GEM
Nirmaalayam the ideal colony for clean and
green living.
These instructions are for the residents and their
guests to follow so that we can be proud of living in
an Eco friendly atmosphere.
Garbage Collection and Disposal:
Garbage is a very essential part of our lives. While
we all can and do create garbage which is unavoidable,
it is necessary that we evolve a system for its disposal.
Following is the suggested method of garbage disposal,
which can always be improved upon by your active participation
in this endeavour:
- Classification of Garbage: Garbage
can be classified into Bio-degradable and Bio Non-degradable
garbage. Bio-degradable garbage is the one which can
decompose and be converted into manure by various
means. It basically consists of food waste, perishables
like leaves, plants etc. Bio Non–degradable
garbage is that which cannot decompose and is primarily
the solid waste like bottles, plastic containers or
plastic sheets, polythene bags etc.
- Disposal of Garbage: We will be
providing two dust bins per villa/apartment. One will
be of Granite White colour meant for Bio-degradable
waste and the other one of Granite Biscuit
colour is for Bio Non–degradable
waste.
- Segregation of Waste
- Garbage is to be segregated at source, which
is your home8
- Please keep a paper bag (preferably) or plastic
bag inside the Garbage Bins so that after collection
the bag can be tied and kept outside your villa/apartment
every day between 7 and 8 A.M. except
on Sundays/holidays
- When you create garbage in your home, please
segregate the garbage depending upon the classification
as given above and put it in the respective
dust bins meant for each type of garbage.
- Until plastic bags are totally banned and
the ban becomes effective, Plastic Bags may
be collected separately and not thrown in the
garbage bins. This may be kept separately and
tied and kept outside the gates of your villa
along with the Garbage meant for disposal on
the First and Third Monday of every month
- Those solid waste which cannot be thrown inside
the garbage bin due to larger size, may please
be kept outside your villa along with other
garbage.
- Collection of Garbage: We have
purchased a three wheel cycle rickshaw (a tri cycle)
duly modified for collecting garbage from villas/apartments
and take it to the central place for further disposal
- Apartments : The
following procedure will be followed:
- Please keep the segregated garbage in the
paper bags/plastic bags outside the door of
your apartment by 7:30 AM
- It will be collected by the Cleaning Maid
to be employed centrally for the upkeep of
apartments’ common areas and kept outside
the Gates of the Respective Apartment Block
by 8 AM by her
- This will be collected by the Cleaning Man
in the Tri-cycle for further disposal
- Villas & Club House
- Please keep the segregated garbage in the
paper bags/plastic bags outside the door of
your apartment between 7 and 8 AM
- It will be collected by the Cleaning Man
directly in the Tri-cycle for further disposal
- This will be collected by the Clean
- Road Side Bins: We will also
be positioning larger Bins on the road side. This
is for any garbage created on the roads. Please
do not throw your house garbage in these bins. This
will be cleaned periodically by the Cleaning man.
- Disposal of Garbage:
- Bio Degradable Garbage:
This will be taken to the Vermi Composting
pit for creating Vermi compost which can
be used as manure by the Residents for their
gardens through their Association
- Bio-Non Degradable Garbage:
This will be disposed off through the Corporation
vehicle for which we are making necessary
arrangements
- Some Suggestions: Gem Nirmaalayam
is our colony. It belongs to all
of us who live inside this Gated Community. Therefore
let us do all that is possible to make it a Zero
Garbage Colony. Some of the points for
you to keep in mind and follow are as follows:
- Do not throw garbage on the roadside or
outside your villa/apartment. The road and
common areas also belong
to all of us
- Do use the garbage bins for segregation
of garbage
- Do not throw paper or wrappers on the
roads or in open space. Carry it to your
home and dispose it off in the dust bins.
- Do not bring plastic bags inside the colony.
Let us pledge ourselves not to use plastic
bags as much as we can
- Carry cloth bags in your cars/ two-wheelers
for shopping of vegetables and groceries
- Educate your maids and house helpers
to dispose of waste correctly
Sewage Treatment Plant:
As you are aware, we have installed a sewage
treatment plant (STP). Once we create enough sewage,
treated water will be available in sufficient quantity
which we will be recycling for your gardens and also
for re-use in the Water Closets. We have installed a
Chlorination Plant also for the recycled waste water.
The STP needs care and attention for
it to function efficiently. We intend keeping the STP
area very clean so that we overcome our dislike for
the sewage which we basically create. Towards this end,
we need to follow certain rules which we request you
to pass on to your family members and guests
when they come to live with you:
- Do not use the EWC or the IWC as a dumping ground
for all unwanted things as this will clog the collection
tank at the STP
- Do not throw Sanitary Towels and Condoms inside
the IWC/EWC. Please dispose them off as part of
non-degradable waste (we do not have any incinerator
in the colony for any bio medical waste disposal)
- Please use maximum recycled water for your garden
and toilets. Once the colony is fully occupied we
will have sufficient treated water for this.
- Please do not use fresh water for car wash or
for your gardens. Water is very precious and we
will always be short of water to meet our requirements.
- Taps are being provided along the Kerb stones
for watering the trees/plants which will be planted
soon. If you find any tap open or leaking please
close the tap or inform the office for repairing
the leaky taps.
- In the apartments, we will be providing Car Wash
Facilities. Please wash your car only where the
facility is provided as the water will drain out
in the drains and thus not dirty the car park area.
Gate and Street Lights:
- Please switch on your Gate lights every evening
and switch it off in the morning. We will be providing
CFL Bulbs which consume very less power. The street
lights as well as your Gate Lights will be switched
off in the morning by the Security personnel.
- Keeping Gate lights on at night will help the
security personnel and improve the security of the
colony. The power consumption being minimal, please
do keep the Gate lights on.
- Solar Street lights that we have installed all
have LEDs and also are fitted with sensors. These
will switch on and off automatically
Save Electricity & Help
Reduce Global Warming:
- Please switch off all unwanted lights in your homes.
- Avoid using incandescent bulbs or tube lights.
Instead use CFL or LED lamps for
lighting which not only consume less power but also
reduce global warming.
- We have provided large windows for natural light.
Please keep the curtains open so that you get natural
light and cross ventilation in your homes. This will
reduce use of power also
- Try Wind Power by installing wind
turbines. These are available at low cost today and
the Government also gives subsidies (We are
exploring the possibility of putting up one for the
Club House and will let you know if it is feasible)
- Avoid use of Geysers. Use only Solar Water Heaters
that have been provided
- When the Generator is on, use minimum power in your
homes
- Reduce carbon emission. Check your vehicles for
pollution
- Do not burn garbage
- Last but not the least, please plant more trees
and plants in your gardens and do not ever cut any
tree.
Solar Water Heaters:
These have been provided for all apartments and villas.
The apartment owners/tenants are requested not to fill
the bath tubs in the bathroom with solar heated water
as this will deprive others of using the same.
Conservation of Water:
Water is even more precious than Black Gold (oil).
Please do not waste water. Following may please be kept
in mind:
- Do not ever waste water.
- Do not keep the taps open while brushing teeth
- Open the tap to the minimum required level
- Showers consume more water. Have one day at least
in a week as a “non-shower” day and use
buckets for bath
- Repair leaky taps immediately
- Check water tank once in a while for leakages and
get it rectified if necessary
- Check taps before going out of the house/apartment
- When going on a holiday, please ensure that all
taps are closed including the connection to Aqua Guard
or any other arrangement you have made for water purification
in your home.
- If you see any water coming out of any tap on the
road (for road side gardens), please close it
- Please educate your maid or house helpers not to
waste water while cleaning utensils or washing clothes
- Washing machines consume lot of water. Please use
washing machine to the full capacity so that you can
save water instead of washing very little clothes
every day
- Cover the Solar Panels with a cloth and tie it up
before going on a vacation
Conclusion:
It should be our endeavour to make GEM Nirmaalayam
the best Eco-friendly Gated Community
in Coimbatore. Towards this end we need to be conscious
of ecology and environment so that we can lead our lives
with clean air, water and surroundings. If all the residents
cooperate, surely we can realize this dream and nurture
nature naturally!
